If you have ancestors from South-Western Ohio by the name of Osborn, Donohue, Allen, or Stevens, chances are you have a relative that's a part of this tree. This is one branch of a much larger tree comprising all the descendants of Joseph OSBORN and Rosanna DORCH. Joseph was from New Jersey - his ancestors trace back to Elizabethan England; he served in the Revolutionary war from 1777 to 1781, and was at Trenton, Monmouth, Valley Forge, and Yorktown. Joseph and Rosanna came to Warren County, Ohio about 1804, establishing a family whose branches have spread far and wide.

I really enjoy finding out about my family's ancestors, discovering their lives, understanding history by finding out where ancestors were and what it would have been like in their day. I think my grandfather, Ford Gano (1913-2000), explained this fascination best in his autobiography: "because of the joy and pleasure I receive from perusing documentaries that they have left behind. As far as I have been able to determine none of them were historically famous or renowned, but simply reading of their lives and happenings has made them more personable and interesting and implanted a much stronger desire on my part to get better acquainted and to know them in the realm of the hereafter."

The following represents the facts as currently found and understood, and "best guesses", of many people interested in and researching these families, including (but not limited to!) Jerry Osborne, Marshall Osborn, Bernice Dunahue, and myself (I'm Liz Osborn, spouse of number 84, below). Sources have included US Federal Census Records, Warren, Clinton, Clermont, and Highland Counties, Ohio marriage and birth records, published cemetery transcriptions, obituaries and on-line sources, such as www.rootsweb.com and www.familysearch.com. We've visited cemeteries and old homesteads. In many cases, we've known the real people listed here. For privacy's sake, details on living persons have been withheld. If you are also researching these people, remember to check all data with primary sources... you may discover something we have overlooked. Ira married Rebecca COX/SCOTT (?) on 22 Oct 1826 in Warren Co., Ohio. Rebecca was born 4 Jul 1809 in OH. She died 12 Oct 1874 in Marion Twp., Clinton, OH and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.

Malinda married her first cousin, Andrew Jackson OSBORN, son of John OSBORN and Sarah Ann JOSLIN, on 17 Mar 1850 in Clinton Co., Ohio. Andrew was the brother of James' wife, Sarah.
Andrew was born 15 Sep 1826 in Ohio. He died 13 Apr 1911 in Ohio and was buried in Warren County, OH.

5. James OSBORN (Ira) was born about 1838 in OH. He died 27 Jun 1871.
James married (1) his first cousin, Sarah Barbara OSBORN, daughter of John OSBORN and Sarah Ann JOSLIN, on 2 Jun 1859 in Warren County, Ohio. Sarah Barbara was the sister of Malinda's husband, Andrew. Sarah Barbara died before 1868.

She was the widow of James' younger brother, Andrew, and the older sister of Eli's future wife, Eliza. Mary died 27 Jun 1871, and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.

6. Andrew OSBORN (Ira) was born about 1842 in OH. Andrew was drafted into the 82nd Ohio Infantry in November 1864, and was a casualty of the Civil War on 28 January 1865. Andrew died in the Army General Hospital #2 at Chattanooga, Tennessee, of measles, contracted in the service.

Andrew married Mary Jane ALLEN, daughter of John ALLEN and Matilda Ann BOWMAN, on 11 Jun 1864 in Clinton Co., Ohio. Mary was born about 1844 in Ohio. Mary died 27 Jun 1871, and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.

* Widow's Pension papers filed by Mary Jane following Andrew's death explicitly state that Andrew and Mary Jane had no children together within the duration of their marriage, and that Andrew had no children prior to his marriage to Mary Jane. But see Melissa OSBORN under James, above.

complicated by Senility and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.
Eli married Eliza D. ALLEN, daughter of John ALLEN and Matilda Ann BOWMAN, on 16 Jul 1871 in Clinton, OH, shortly after the death of Eliza's older sister Mary Jane, who had been married to Eli's older brothers Andrew and James. Eliza was born 7 Mar 1855 in OH. She died 14 Apr 1920 in Clinton County, OH from Cancer of the Stomach and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.

16. Melissa OSBORN (Andrew or James* OSBORN, Ira) was born April 1865.
She died 1947 in Clinton Co., Ohio and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.
*Melissa's death certificate states that her parents were James OSBORN and Mary Jane ALLEN. This is problematic, in that at the time of Melissa's birth, Mary Jane would have been the newly-bereaved widow of Andrew OSBORN. In pension application papers dated 29 May 1865, witnessed by James OSBORN, Mary Jane OSBORN attested that she and Andrew had no children born "During the Continuance of Said Marriage." It leaves open the question of whether Melissa is the Posthumous Daughter of Andrew and Mary Jane Allen OSBORN, or the daughter of James and Sarah Barbara Osborn OSBORN, and was an infant at the time of Sarah Barbara's death, and James subsequent remarriage to his former sister-in-law.

Melissa married Joseph Calvin DONAHUE, son of Andrew DONAHUE and Elizabeth Ann STEVENS, on 30 Oct 1881 in Clinton Co., Ohio.
Joseph was born 1849 in Highland Co., OH. He died 1920 and was buried in Second Creek Cemetery, Marion, Clinton, OH.
